A newly formed family, pursuing individual goals and facing the complexities of modern life, faces challenges, relying on love, trust and resilience to guide them. A father and son, Marguerite and Sigal, enjoy a little nature’s joy as they sail along a deserted beach. A little bit of nature’s joy. Between the many jobs, the drone strikes that bring death from above, the checkpoints and the work payments that take months to process if they ever get implemented, such treasured moments are few and far between. In their simple and small cinder block and corrugated steel house, the couple lives, where Sigal, Marguerite’s sister, dreams of light. Arevelo dreams of making and selling her own clothes. Because she is an unmarried woman, she cannot get a loan, Arevelo devises a plan to escape regulation. The risks are too great. Haraway worked with the community in Paradise to make the film and employed non-professional actors. The film’s authenticity requires investing in Somalia. The ambient sounds of the radio, traffic, waves and music from the wind contribute to the realistic nature. “The wind is a character,” “So human characters are never alone,” Haraway said. “Culture is also a character, and I enjoyed immersing myself in Somali songs, stories, and landscape.”
